October 28 dawned with a chill in the air, but more than that, there was a palpable excitement for members of ERI’s CARxE Coalition. CARxE participated in the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day, hosting two drive up-drop off locations to accept unused and unwanted medications.
Over the course of four hours, coalition members and volunteers collected 466 pounds of medications at Buy For Less (OKC) and Smart Saver (MWC), shattering their previous collection records. At the conclusion of the event, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics secured and the medications and then delivered them to Covanta Energy in Tulsa, where they will be destroyed and used as a form of alternative energy.
CARxE will host another drive up-drop off event in the spring. Watch for a date and time to be announced!
The CARxE Coalition (Coalition Against Rx drug Epidemic) is dedicated preventing the misuse and abuse of prescription medications in adults in Oklahoma County. For more information, call the CARxE hotline at 405-847-8969.
