May is National Foster Care Month!

There are 424,000 American youth in foster care. No matter how much time you have to give, you can do something positive that will "change a lifetime" for a young person in foster care. For more information on how you can help, please visit www.fostercaremonth.org today.

EAGLE'S WINGS

The Eagle's Wings Mentoring Program has been serving at-risk youth and their families since 1996. Our goal is to help each child develop reiliency skillks in social competencies, and problem solving. We plan to increase the number of community youth who are able to live positive productive and healthy lives as adults.

The Eagle's Wings Mentoring program serves teens, ages 12 to 18 who have been in contact with the judicial system or are at high risk for doing so.  Our OKC schools will serve the same identified population, focusing on 6th to 12th graders. Our referrals come from many sources that include:
The judicial system
Schools
Agencies
Parents
Community Leaders

Delinquency Prevention
Our main focus is preventing youth from becoming involved with the Juvenile Justice System. We will meet on site with 15 to 20 high-risk students at various OKC Public Schools, providing groups, activities and support.

Interest Groups and Activities

We have a variety of interest groups and activities that encourage our youth to develop a positive sense of self and create goals for their future. By attending enriching, cultural events, learning about educational and vocational opportunities, addressing critical life skills  issues and exploring artistic and sprots skills, our teens perceive a broader picture of their potential.

Benefits of Interest Groups

Chess
Chess is a new way of solving the old problem of poor education. From the streets of Harlem to Venezuela's public schools the sport of kings has been implemented as an effective tool for teaching students to utilize their higher order thinking skills and to strive to overcome personal problems to reach their full potential. In light of these facts it is not unreasonable to imagine chess as a broader part of schools in America. Chess could very well be one of the missing components for America to regain its place at the top for educating its young people.

Golf
Golf is a wholesome lifetime activity that directly benefits the young people of any community. When people are introduced to the game at a young age, they will generally return to the sport as adults, whether or not they continued to play throughout their formative years.  Golf involves direct application of both basic and advanced mathematics, geometry & physics. It promotes both strategic planning and analytical thinking.

Aquatics
Aquatics promote a healthy life style and teaches critical life skills. Research has shown that an effective aquatics program promotes physical, social, and psychological benefits.

Basketball

There are many benefits from youth participation in organized sports, particularly the physical, social and personal benefits.

Music
Students of music learn craftsmanship as they study how details are put together painstakingly and what constitutes good, as opposed to mediocre, work. These standards, when applied to a student's own work, demand a new level of excellence and require students to stretch their inner resources.

Dance
A study of the arts provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards the people of these cultures. This development of compassion and empathy, as opposed to development of greed and a "me first" attitude, provides a bridge across cultural chasms that leads to respect of other races at an early age.
