The primary objectives of the ERI/APRC are to: 1) support the adoption of policies on underage drinking to include accountability, both criminally and/or civilly for adults who serve alcohol to youth at parties, 2) minimize the number of events, including Centennial events where alcohol is available and accessible, especially for under-age youths, 3) promote attitudinal changes about alcohol use at public events, 4) mobilize communities to influence businesses to limit alcohol advertisements and placements, especially in minority and low-income communities, 5) support the enactment of policies that address public safety issues in parks, etc. where alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs are used, 6) work for passage of ordinances that prohibit the use of all tobacco products in existing, new, and expanded park and recreation facilities, 7) mobilize key stakeholders to address the ATOD issues identified in the 2006 Oklahoma Prevention Needs Assessment Survey (OPNA) by providing ongoing training opportunities for them, and 8) engage youth in community prevention efforts by expanding the number of youths participating in coalitions such as Underage Drinking (2M2L) Clubs. The purpose of these environmental strategies is to 1) limit access to substances, 2) change the culture and contexts within which decisions about substance use are made without affecting availability, or 3) reduce the negative associated with use by influencing changes in community norms, access and availability, media messages, and policy and enforcement. The strategies proposed by the ERI/APRC have the possibility of impacting changes in behavior throughout large populations, resulting in reduced community problems. |
